off the shelf vs bespoke comparison

"Can I have a bespoke website, please?"

It's a question we still get asked every now and then, usually from someone who had a bespoke website built years ago and assumes it's still the gold standard.

There was a time when "bespoke" (a website designed and built just for you) really was the dog's danglies. If you wanted something that looked the part and worked properly, bespoke was pretty much your only option.

But it's 2026, and things have changed. A lot. The gap between a bespoke site and a good off-the-shelf (ready-made) one has shrunk to almost nothing, while the price gap has never been wider.

We've been building websites for militaria dealers since 2004, so we've watched this shift happen first-hand. This is our honest take on why a bespoke website now costs an arm and a leg, and why, for the vast majority of dealers, a ready-made ("off-the-shelf") website is the smarter buy.

TL;DR (for those of you who don't like reading!)

  • A bespoke site starts with a separate copy of our off-the-shelf platform, exactly as it is on the day we begin. We then hand-build your own design and any custom features on top of that copy. All that hand-building takes a huge amount of time, and time is money.

  • Today a website has to look and work perfectly on hundreds of different screens (phones, tablets, laptops, big monitors), and Google is extremely fussy about how it's built. On a bespoke build, every custom page and feature still has to be built and tested by hand across all of them, which is a mountain of extra work.

  • Because that copy sits apart from our main platform, a bespoke site is frozen on the day it's made. It gets everything our off-the-shelf platform could do on that date, but none of the improvements that come after, so as technology moves on it slowly falls behind, and any new feature means paying a developer to bolt it on.

  • Our off-the-shelf websites run on a living platform we're constantly improving, and every upgrade lands on your site automatically.

  • Our websites aren't just websites. They're a full "software as a service" platform: website, stock management, mobile app, the lot.

  • Off-the-shelf no longer means "looks like everyone else's". Loads of themes, full control of your colours, and new designs being added all the time.

Here's what we'll cover:

1. First, what do we actually mean by "bespoke"?

2. Why a bespoke website costs so much these days

3. The bit almost everyone forgets: maintenance

4. Your website isn't just a website (hello, "software as a service")

5. "But won't a ready-made site look like everyone else's?"

bespoke tailor

First, what do we actually mean by "bespoke"?

The word "bespoke" actually comes from tailoring: a bespoke suit is one cut to your exact measurements. A bespoke website is the same idea.

In our case, we take our off-the-shelf platform (the ready-made system all of our other dealer websites run on) exactly as it is on the day we start and make a completely separate copy of it, just for you. We then hand-build your own design, and any custom features you've asked for, on top of that copy. From that point on it's your own standalone site, developed just for you, and no longer connected to the platform everyone else is on.

An off-the-shelf (or "ready-made") website starts from that same platform. The difference is that it stays on it. There's no separate copy: your site lives on the main platform we look after and keep improving, and you make it your own with your branding, colours, content and stock.

Years ago, bespoke was better than off-the-shelf. Today? The gap has shrunk to almost nothing, while the price gap has got bigger than ever. Here's why.

Why a bespoke website costs so much these days

A bespoke website is handcrafted, and skilled developers don't come cheap. Starting from a copy of our platform gives us a solid head start, but everything you and your customers actually see and use still has to be designed, built and tested by hand, and there's far more of that than there used to be. Two things in particular have piled on the cost.

a) It has to work perfectly on hundreds of different screens

Cast your mind back 15 or 20 years. Pretty much everyone browsed the web on a desktop computer with roughly the same size screen. Build it once, job done.

Then the iPhone landed in 2007, tablets followed, and everything changed. Today your website has to look and work beautifully on a tiny phone, a mid-size tablet, a laptop and a huge desktop monitor, plus every size in between.

On a ready-made platform like ours, all of that is already handled and tested. On a bespoke build, that work starts again for your custom design: every page and every feature has to be laid out, built and tested by hand at every one of those screen sizes. That's a massive amount of extra work, and you're paying for every hour of it.

b) Google is unbelievably fussy

Google doesn't just care what's on your website. It cares how it's built.

It wants your site to load quickly, to be properly mobile-friendly, to have every image optimised, and it even measures annoying things like the page jumping around while it loads. Tick all of Google's boxes and you've got a fighting chance of ranking. Miss them and you'll struggle, no matter how lovely your site looks.

Your copy of the platform comes with all those technical foundations already in place, but every custom page and feature then has to be built to that same standard and tested, which takes serious development time (and someone who really knows what they're doing). With our off-the-shelf platform, all of that technical wizardry is baked in as standard, so you don't even need to know what it means.

The bit almost everyone forgets: maintenance

Here's the part that catches people out:

The day we take that copy, your bespoke site is essentially frozen in time. It has everything the platform could do on that date, and then the world carries on without it. New devices come out, Google changes its rules, anything needs updating... and your bespoke site just sits there getting older, unless you pay a developer to keep tinkering with it (which, again, isn't cheap).

An off-the-shelf platform works completely differently. Ours is a living, breathing thing that we're improving all the time. We're constantly maintaining it, keeping it in line with Google's latest demands, and adding new features and designs.

Best of all, when we make an improvement, it rolls out to everyone automatically. You get all the upgrades without lifting a finger, and without a single extra invoice landing on your doormat.

Your website isn't just a website (hello, "software as a service")

You might have heard the phrase "software as a service" thrown around. It sounds techy, but the idea is dead simple, and you already use it every day.

Think of Netflix. You don't buy a film and own it forever, frozen on a dusty old DVD. You pay a monthly subscription, and in return you get a service that's constantly updated, with new things added all the time. That's "software as a service", and it's exactly how our off-the-shelf platform works.

Because here's the thing: what you get from us isn't really "a website" at all. It's a whole system that happens to include a website. Under the bonnet you also get:

  • A proper stock management system to add, edit and organise your pieces

  • A mobile app

  • The option to feed your stock straight onto several marketplaces (including Antiques Boutique and Militaria Zone, among others)

  • Links into other systems, like Google Shopping, Instagram Shopping, and more

  • All the behind-the-scenes SEO and technical bits Google loves, done for you

  • And much more...

A bespoke site does start out with all of that, exactly as it stands on the day your copy is made. The difference is what happens next: none of our later improvements reach it automatically. If you want one, it has to be built into your copy by hand, and you'll be paying a developer to do it, one feature at a time.

"But won't a ready-made site look like everyone else's?"

This is the big worry we hear, and 10 years ago it was a fair one. Off-the-shelf websites used to be a bit "cookie cutter": you could spot them a mile off because they all looked identical.

Those days are long gone.

Today our ready-made websites are genuinely flexible. You can:

  • Choose from a range of different themes to suit your style

  • Tailor the colour scheme to match your brand

  • Lay things out to show off your stock the way you want

And we're not standing still, either. We're always working on new themes and designs, so the choice keeps growing.

Don't just take our word for it, though. Have a look through our portfolio of dealer websites and see the variety for yourself. We reckon you'll be pleasantly surprised at how different they can look.

fork in the road

So, bespoke or off-the-shelf?

We're not here to tell you bespoke is "bad". If you've got a genuinely unusual requirement, there can still be a case for it, and we'll always give you our honest opinion either way.

But for the vast majority of antique and militaria dealers, the maths is pretty clear. In 2026, a good off-the-shelf website gives you a stunning, fast, Google-friendly site that's constantly improving and does far more than a website ever used to, all for a fraction of the cost of bespoke.

The advantage bespoke once had hasn't completely vanished, but it has dwindled to the point where, for most dealers, it's simply not worth the extra money.
